Staying in pace with our changing economic and environmental climate dictates the direction the MRI Directors, Malcolm Short and Tom Walters, believe the Institute must head.

Currently, regional councils are seeking input into the long term plans which will affect the land use choices available to New Zealanders.

Creating information streams and research programs which keep pace with these challenges is characterising the programs underway at present within MRI.

  1. Sustainable farming options... achieving information systems which give land owners and managers choices in how they can achieve a sustainable economic plan while balancing systems which enhance and protect our natural environment.
  2. Collaborative research projects aimed at answering some of the most essential questions hindering existing products with unsustainable systems, so that a better outcome can be gained from the resources available to our immediate regions. Some of this research could provide a stronger foundation to our economies, not by re-inventing an already used product model, but driving the product model to have a more effective production outcome, a more sustainable outcome.
